Après avoir servi en Irak en 2004 et 2005, Kevin Powers a tenté de répondre par la fiction à la question qu'on ne cessait de lui poser depuis son retour du front : « Comment c'était là-bas ? » Parallèlement à l'élaboration de son premier roman, Yellow Birds, Kevin Powers écrit des poèmes, une forme plus organique qui précise sa pensée : « La poésie m'a aidé à mettre de l'ordre dans le monde », dit-il. Elle lui permet de zoomer sur des idées, des émotions, des situations, de changer de point de vue et d'angle, de décrire la réalité hallucinée de la guerre, et dire la honte et la culpabilité qui hantent le retour à la vie lorsqu'on a trop appris sur la mort.
On croise ainsi le soldat Bartle, héros de Yellow Birds, dans le poème « Lettre écrite pendant une accalmie dans les combats » qui donne son titre au recueil. On se souvient aussi de la première phrase indélébile de Yellow Birds : « La guerre essaya de nous tuer durant le printemps. » Preuve que le poète est indissociable du romancier.
